Why black-and-grey tattoo specialists are different

Black-and-grey tattooing is a discipline. The artist mixes black ink with sterile water in escalating dilutions (sometimes 8+ shades on the same piece) to build depth, contrast, and the photographic quality that makes good B&G stand out. Not every tattooer does this well — most who advertise it are actually doing solid linework with light shading.

Real B&G specialists usually come from a realism or portrait background. Their portfolios are full of healed work with smooth gradients, no banding, and faces or animals that still look right at 5 feet away. Look for at least 10 healed pieces (3+ months old) before booking.

Expect to pay $200–$400/hr for a true B&G realist. Sessions run 4–8 hours each. A sleeve takes 4–10 sessions over 6–18 months. Worth every dollar — black-and-grey realism ages better than almost any other style.
