Frequently asked questions.
Quick answers about how Markd works, what to expect at a US tattoo shop, and how to get the most out of your appointment.
Is Markd free to use?
+
Yes. Markd is a free directory of tattoo parlors across America. There is no signup, no paywall, and no fee to browse, search, or contact a shop. We may show ads to keep the lights on, but the directory itself stays free.
How are parlors added to Markd?
+
We aggregate publicly available information about licensed tattoo studios nationwide — name, address, phone, hours, photos, reviews — and verify it against the studio's own website and listings before publishing. We do not accept payment to be listed.
How do you decide which parlors are 'verified'?
+
A parlor is marked verified once we've cross-checked its license status with the relevant state or local health authority, confirmed the address and phone, and reviewed its public portfolio. Verification is about existence and legitimacy — it is not an endorsement of any particular artist.
I own a shop. How do I update my listing or get removed?
+
Email studio@getmarkd.org from a domain or email associated with the shop. We respond to update and removal requests within 3 business days. Removal is honored on request — no questions asked.
Do you book appointments or take deposits?
+
No. Markd is purely a directory. When you find a shop you like, you contact them directly through their phone, website, or Instagram. Deposits and bookings are handled by the studio, not by us.
How much does a tattoo cost?
+
Most US shops have an $80–$150 minimum. Hourly rates run $150–$250 for established artists, and $300+ for sought-after specialists. Rates vary by city — coastal metros tend to skew higher. See our pricing guide for a full breakdown.
Do I need to tip my tattoo artist?
+
Yes — 20% is the standard floor in the U.S. for a tattoo you're happy with. Tip in cash when possible. Read our tipping guide for the full breakdown.
How do I take care of a fresh tattoo?
+
Follow your artist's instructions first — they know the ink and technique they used. As a baseline: keep the wrap on for the time they tell you, wash gently with unscented soap, pat dry, and use a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer. See our aftercare guide for the day-by-day playbook.
Can minors get tattooed?
+
Age laws vary by state. Most states require 18+ with no exception; some allow minors with a parent or guardian present and written consent. Most reputable shops decline to tattoo anyone under 18 regardless of local law. Always bring a government ID.
What if I have a bad experience at a parlor I found here?
+
Email support@getmarkd.org with the shop name and a brief description. We take complaints seriously — repeated, verifiable issues lead to delisting. We can't mediate disputes, but we can stop sending people to a shop that isn't holding up its end.
