The most common question first-timers ask: 'Which hurts more?' The answer depends on where, how long, and what kind of pain you handle better — sharp and over, or dull and lingering.
Piercing pain — the spike
A piercing is one fast pop. Sharp, bright, over in under two seconds. Most piercings score 3–5/10 on the moment. Cartilage piercings (helix, daith, conch) sting more than lobes because cartilage has less give. Septum and nostril make your eyes water but don't actually hurt much.
The harder part is the next 2–8 weeks of low-grade soreness when you bump it, sleep on it, or change the jewelry. That dull throb is what most people remember, not the piercing itself.
Tattoo pain — the burn
A tattoo is a sustained, scratchy burn that doesn't stop for the length of the session. The first 90 seconds are the worst (adrenaline). After that your nervous system adjusts and it becomes manageable but boring.

Eat a real meal 90 minutes before. Hydrate all morning. Skip caffeine and alcohol the night before. Don't bring an anxious friend. Breathe deeply, especially the first minute. Numbing cream (lidocaine 5%) helps tattoos in the first hour but wears off — don't rely on it for long pieces.
