The Most Tattooed Cities in America, 2026
We analyzed 46 verified tattoo shops across 7 US cities — ranked by shop density per 100,000 residents.
Key findings
Reno tops the chart
With 2.2 tattoo shops per 100,000 residents, Reno, NV leads America in tattoo-shop density.
The West runs the table
Reno and other Western metros take 1 of the top 10 spots — outpacing the South, Midwest and Northeast.
Reviews tell a deeper story
Across the dataset, 8,602 customer reviews show where America actually gets tattooed — not just where shops exist.

Methodology
GetMarkd maintains a verified directory of 46 US tattoo shops. For this study we included every city in our directory with at least 5 verified shops and a published US Census population estimate (2023 vintage).
The headline metric is shops per 100,000 residents, calculated as (verified shops in city) / population × 100,000. We also surface reviews per 1,000 residents as a demand-side proxy — cities with high review counts per capita see disproportionate tattoo activity.
Shops without photos or with fewer than 5 listings citywide were excluded to avoid skew from sparse data. Population figures come from the US Census Bureau's 2023 city-and-town population estimates. Shop and review counts were pulled from the GetMarkd directory on the date shown above.
A note on city limits: we use city-proper population (not metro-area) to keep the comparison apples-to-apples. Metros with large suburban populations (e.g., Atlanta, Dallas) will rank lower on this list than they would by metro-area population.
