The helix is the outer upper rim of your ear cartilage. It's the most-pierced cartilage spot in the world — and the most likely to develop a bump if you mistreat it.

Pick placement before you walk in

Bring reference photos. The helix runs along several inches of cartilage, and an inch up or down completely changes the look. A good piercer will draw 2–3 dots and let you choose in the mirror.

Why a flat-back stud, not a hoop

Hoops move every time something brushes your ear, which keeps the channel irritated. A flat-back labret stud (sometimes called a 'flat-disc back') sits flush against the back of the ear and barely moves. Once healed, swap to a hoop if you want — but start flat.

The pillow problem

The single biggest cause of helix bumps is sleeping on the piercing. Get a travel pillow with a hole cut out of the center, or rotate to your stomach for a few months. Worth the inconvenience.

Doubles and triples

Stacked helix piercings (two or three in a row) are common but mean longer overall healing. Most piercers will do up to three in one session — beyond that, healing is unrealistic.

FAQ

How long does a helix piercing take to heal?

6 to 9 months for the cartilage channel to fully heal. The outside may look healed at 2 months — it isn't. Forward helix and double helix take the same amount of time per piercing.

How much does a helix piercing cost?

Most reputable US studios charge $40–$80 for the piercing plus $30–$60 for implant-grade titanium jewelry. Total: $70–$140. Forward helix is usually $10–$20 more because placement is fussier.

Does a helix piercing hurt?

Most people rate it 4/10 — a firm pinch and a few seconds of pressure as the needle crosses cartilage. Less painful than a daith or rook, more than a lobe.

When can I change my helix piercing?

Wait at least 4–6 months and only after your piercer confirms it's healed. Changing it earlier is the #1 cause of helix bumps and channel collapse.

What gauge is a helix piercing?

Standard helix piercings are done at 16g. Once healed, you can downsize to 18g for thinner rings or studs.

How do I clean a helix piercing?

Sterile saline spray twice daily on both sides of the piercing. Avoid sleeping on it, skip rubbing alcohol and tea tree oil, and don't rotate the jewelry — that tears the healing channel.

Does Claire's do helix piercings?

Claire's pierces helixes with a piercing gun, which is not recommended for cartilage — guns shatter cartilage rather than cleanly cutting through it, leading to higher bump and infection rates. Go to a studio that uses a single-use sterile needle.

Can my helix close after years?

Yes — cartilage piercings can close surprisingly fast even after a decade. Leave a piece of jewelry in even when you're not wearing decorative ones.

Will my helix reject?

Rare for properly placed helix piercings. Rejection is more common in surface piercings (bridge, eyebrow).
