How to prep for a Brazilian wax (without overthinking it)
A Brazilian is the most-requested service at almost every waxing salon in the country, and yet most first-timers walk in with the same handful of questions: How long should my hair be? Should I shave first? What do I wear? Do I tip? The answers are easier than the internet makes them sound.
Hair length: the only number you need
Your hair should be about a quarter inch long — roughly the length of a grain of rice. That's long enough for the wax to grip cleanly and short enough that removal is quick. If it's been a while since your last shave, your esthetician will trim before they start; that's normal and adds about two minutes.
If you shave right before your appointment, you'll need to rebook in two to three weeks. Hair that's too short slips through the wax instead of pulling out, and you'll be back where you started.
Exfoliate the day before, not the day of
A gentle scrub the night before lifts dead skin and frees any ingrowns from previous waxes, which makes the wax grip the hair more cleanly. Skip the harsh stuff — no glycolic acid pads, no aggressive scrubs, no retinol on the area. The skin should be calm, not stripped.
On the day of your appointment, shower as normal but skip lotions, oils, and deodorant near the area. A clean, product-free surface helps the wax adhere only to the hair.
What to wear
Loose cotton underwear and loose pants or a skirt. Skin that's just been waxed is sensitive, and tight denim or shapewear can cause friction bumps. Bring a backup pair of undies if you tend to spot — light bleeding from a few stubborn follicles is normal and not a sign of anything wrong.
Time it around your period
Skin is most sensitive in the few days right before and during your period. If you can, book a week after — you'll genuinely feel less pain. If your cycle doesn't cooperate, take 400mg of ibuprofen 30–45 minutes before your appointment to take the edge off.
The first appointment is the worst one
Everyone says this and it's true. Virgin hair is thick, the follicles are stubborn, and you don't know what to expect. By your third Brazilian, the hair grows back finer, less dense, and on a more synchronized cycle — meaning faster appointments and noticeably less discomfort.
Book your next appointment four to five weeks out before you leave the salon. Consistency is what makes waxing feel easy.
What about tipping?
Standard is 15–20%, same as a haircut. If your esthetician is great and you plan to come back, tip on the higher end — it builds the kind of relationship that gets you the favored time slots and the occasional free brow cleanup.
FAQ
Does it really hurt that much?
The first one stings — there's no point pretending otherwise. By the third visit most people describe it as 'uncomfortable, not painful.' Hair grows back finer and follicles loosen, so each appointment is easier than the last.
Should I shave between appointments?
No. Shaving resets the growth cycle and brings back the thick, stubborn hair that made the first wax so unpleasant. Just leave it alone for 4–5 weeks and rebook.
Can I get waxed on my period?
Yes — wear a fresh tampon and let your esthetician know. Most salons are completely unfazed; just expect slightly more sensitivity.
