Aftercare is the part nobody warns you about. A skilled wax is only half the work — the other half is what you do over the following four weeks. Most ingrowns, bumps, and irritation are caused by avoidable habits in the first 48 hours after your appointment.

The first 24 hours: leave it alone

No gym, no sauna, no hot tubs, no sex, no sun. Anything that creates heat, sweat, or friction on freshly waxed skin invites bacteria into open follicles. That's the recipe for tiny red bumps and breakouts in the day or two after a wax.

Wear loose cotton. Skip the shapewear, the tight jeans, and the workout leggings. Cotton breathes; synthetic fabrics trap heat and sweat where you don't want them.

The first shower

Lukewarm, not hot. Use a gentle, unscented body wash — skip anything with fragrance, acid actives, or harsh sulfates for the first day. Pat dry with a clean towel; don't rub.

Day 3 onward: start exfoliating

This is the single most important habit for preventing ingrowns. Every other day, gently exfoliate the waxed area — a soft scrub mitt, a chemical exfoliant with glycolic or lactic acid, or a body brush all work. The goal is to lift the dead skin that traps new hairs as they push back through.

Skip the harsh stuff: no aggressive sugar scrubs, no salicylic acid pads daily, no DIY coffee grinds. Sensitive skin responds better to consistency than intensity.

Moisturize daily

Hydrated skin is supple skin, and supple skin lets new hair break through cleanly. A lightweight, unscented body lotion every day — fragrance-free if you're prone to breakouts. Look for ingredients like ceramides, squalane, or hyaluronic acid; skip anything with menthol, alcohol, or strong essential oils for the first few days.

If you do get an ingrown

Resist the urge to dig. Apply a warm compress for a few minutes to bring the hair closer to the surface, then use a chemical exfoliant (glycolic acid pads work well) to dissolve the skin trapping it. Most ingrowns release on their own within a few days. If one becomes painful, red, and pus-filled, it's infected — see a dermatologist, not Reddit.

Between appointments

Do not shave. We can't say this enough. Shaving between waxes resets the growth cycle, blunts the hair, and brings back every issue you were trying to fix with waxing in the first place. Rebook every 4–5 weeks and stay consistent — the results compound.

FAQ

Can I work out the same day?

Don't. Heat, sweat, and friction on open follicles is the fastest way to get small breakouts in the next 48 hours. Wait at least 24 hours, ideally 36.

What's the best ingrown product?

Cheap and effective: glycolic acid toner pads (Stridex Maximum or Tend Skin) applied after your shower. Use daily for the first week post-wax, then every other day.

How long until I can shave if I need to?

You shouldn't — shaving resets the cycle and you'll have to start over. If you absolutely have to (vacation emergency), wait at least 7 days post-wax and use a fresh, sharp blade.
