Aftercare

Saniderm vs traditional aftercare: which method should you use?

7 min read·December 10, 2026·By the GetMarkd team

Twenty years ago every tattoo healed the same way: plastic wrap for a few hours, then 2–3 weeks of obsessive washing and lotion. Then Saniderm (and Tegaderm, Recovery Derm Shield, and other second-skin films) arrived and split the aftercare world in half.

Saniderm method

Your artist applies a clear adhesive film over the tattoo before you leave. You leave it on for 24 hours, peel it carefully in the shower, wash the tattoo once, dry it, then apply a fresh sheet that stays on for 4–6 more days.

Pros: no scabbing, no peeling drama, you can shower normally, sleep on it, and wear clothes over it without ruining anything. Heals faster (10–14 days vs 21+).

Cons: some skin is allergic to the adhesive (you'll know within 4 hours — red, itchy, bumpy under the film). Expensive ($20–$40 for a large sheet). Can trap fluid if applied over a tattoo that's still weeping heavily.

Traditional method

Plastic wrap for 2–4 hours, remove, wash gently, air dry, apply a thin layer of unscented lotion. Repeat 2–3 times daily for 2–3 weeks.

Pros: cheap, works for any skin type, no allergy risk. Cons: full scab-and-peel cycle (itchy, looks alarming, sheds colored flakes), can't get the tattoo properly wet for 2 weeks, slower heal.

When to use which

Use Saniderm: most adults, most placements, especially large pieces, color packing, and anywhere you want to skip the messy heal.

Skip Saniderm: skin allergic to medical adhesive, tattoos on hands/feet (too much movement to stay sealed), the bend of an elbow or knee, or if you've had a bad reaction in the past.

Day-by-day with Saniderm

Day 0: artist applies it. Don't peek. Some fluid pooling under the film is normal.

Day 1: peel in a warm shower (pulls it off in one slow motion, parallel to skin). Wash with unscented soap. Pat dry. Apply fresh sheet.

Days 2–6: leave it alone. Shower normally. Don't pick at edges.

Day 7: peel final sheet. Tattoo will look 80% healed. Moisturize lightly for another 7 days.
