Industrial piercing: two holes, one barbell, lots of patience
An industrial is two helix piercings connected by a single straight barbell across the top of the ear. It's the most committed cartilage piercing you can get and the hardest one to heal correctly.
Placement is everything
Both holes must be perfectly aligned to allow a straight bar to pass between them without forcing the cartilage. A great piercer will plan the geometry of your ear before they pick up a needle. A mediocre one will pierce two helix holes and hope for the best — that's how industrials reject.
Healing is slow
Two cartilage piercings + one bar that moves whenever you turn your head = 9–12 months minimum, often longer. Sleep on the opposite side, no over-ear headphones, no twisting the bar.
Downsizing
You'll need at least one downsize as swelling goes down — the starter bar is intentionally a little long. Skip the downsize and the long bar will keep snagging and irritating the piercings.
FAQ
Can I do an industrial in two sessions?
Some piercers recommend it — heal one hole at a time. It's slower overall but reduces risk.
Can I swap to two separate studs later?
Yes, once fully healed. Many people convert their industrial into a pair of independent helix piercings down the road.
